Chapter Fourteen

The Detectives

It only takes a little bit of charming to get past the desk sergeant at the Ashland PD.

I probably could have simply talked my way into a meeting with the detective; however, I’m in a hurry. Yeah, still being optimistic as possible given the situation. No idea how much time Heather might have—if she has any left. Still, even if the worst is true, the faster I figure this out, the faster I can get home to Farah.

Two detectives meet with me in a small conference room. I’m in luck, both are guys.

Derek Carter is the slightly older of the two. He’s an athletic black man with short, neat hair and a small scar on the left side of his chin. Scott Turner, the other detective, looks like the stereotypical high school jock—a few inches over six feet, plus he’s muscular. The dark blond brush cut suggests recently ex-military. Can’t be that recent if he’s already made detective. Guess he just likes the look.

Both are friendlier than I’d expect the police to be when talking to a civilian PI. Some of that is, of course, the low-strength charm I’m giving off. The rest, I assume, is coming from desperation. They’ve got nothing but a suspect in custody with flimsy circumstantial evidence—not to arrest on, which means they’ll have to release him soon. If their evidence was good, or at least appeared to be good, Daniel would already be officially charged. They definitely can’t hold him for much longer. Somehow, they must have sweet-talked a judge into some sort of flight risk incarceration just to hold him this long. Yeah, they’re desperate to find something, anything to move this case forward, even if that means talking to a PI.

We spend a little under an hour comparing notes after I introduce myself and point out the parents have asked me to help find Heather. Both detectives are mostly convinced she’s dead. They talk about their frustrations at not finding a body or even a murder weapon. Detective Carter talks at length about the fact that the search of Daniel’s vehicle had turned up zilch.

Detective Turner springboards off the topic of the car to mention that they located tire marks matching Daniel’s car on the shore of Lake Waldo, which isn’t very far from the service station where the worker saw the two of them arguing.

“We think he probably did the deed outside the vehicle, closer to the water somewhere,” says Detective Turner.

“That girl is in the lake, I’m sure of it.” Detective Carter shakes his head. “Damn shame. So young.”

I jot down ‘Lake Waldo’ in my notepad. “Did you have divers search the lake?”

“Yeah. The boys went down there.” Carter drums his fingers on the pale grey table. “Didn’t find anything. Lake Waldo’s a big lake, though. Them not finding her doesn’t mean she’s not in there. We talked to some people who’d been around the area that day. Some of them mentioned seeing a small boat. We think he might have taken her out near the middle of the lake before dumping her body overboard.
